PLEASE, SUPPORT PAWS ON MAY 5TH!

Hi Parents and Families;

Room 15 (Grade 4/5), a Paws of the Future company, is having a Family Fun Night on May 5th, 2016 from 3:40 - 5:10 p.m. in the Linwood School gym and auditorium.
You can get tickets for $3.00 cash each from your kids or Miss Cichosz (mcichosz@sjsd.net).
Kids ages 0 - 3 years enter for free, but all kids not in room 15 need to attend with an adult.
The money is going to Manitoba Underdogs Rescue.
There will be a door prize at the end of the event, so bring your ticket to enter!
The snacks and drinks are only $1.00 cash and there will be board games too.
We are looking forward to meeting you there!

Paws of the Future

We have started selling tickets for our Family Fun Night! Last week, we were busy preparing our tickets (we wrote PAWS on them for our company name) and our ticket packs, which included an information and record sheet, that Miss Cichosz prepared, and 10 tickets for each company member to sell. We expect to sell at least 100 tickets, but are hoping to sell 300! We also made posters to advertise our Family Fun Night and have begun to post them around the school. Remember to check back for more updates about Paws of the Future and our classroom learning!

Poetry and Becoming Better Writers and Readers

We have been studying poetry since March, including thinking deeply about how words affect the reader. We recently started writing our own poetry. We began by writing found poetry, also known as blackout poetry. To write this poetry, we use a page of text (copied from novels) and circle the words we want to keep for our poem. We cross or blackout the words we don't want. Found poetry has been fun to write and a great jumping off point for free verse poetry.

Some of us have felt inspired to use the words from the text pages with words from our imaginations to create our own free verse poems. We learned that poetry doesn't have to rhyme to be considered "real poetry" and that we can play with words and break a lot of rules that we use in other forms of writing and even other forms of poetry. Poetry can be emotionally moving and powerful or silly and entertaining! We love sharing our writing with the class, like in the picture below. Miss Cichosz is encouraging us to use more descriptive words in our writing, so studying poetry is an interesting way to make our writing come alive for the reader!

Business Project Update

Great news! We will be receiving the $300 subsidy for our business project! Miss Cichosz received an e-mail from Imagineaction (a social justice program of the Canadian Teachers' Federation) that included our notification and the rules of the subsidy, such as needing to post receipts of our purchases and updates about our project on the Imagineaction website.

Ms. Smith came to visit our first week back from Spring Break and worked mainly with our Sales and Marketing Team while Miss Cichosz checked in with all the other teams. Even though we had a smaller group because some students were away for the Divisional Science Fair on Wednesday, we worked hard and accomplished quite a lot.

The Administration and Finance Team worked on our overall business plan by writing a description of our business and the charity we support (Manitoba Underdogs Rescue) and made room to include a brief description about the roles and plans for each team on chart paper as our first draft.

Our Refreshment Team made a list of potential snacks and drinks to serve at our Family Fun Night. They also worked on writing two letters, one to Pepsi and one to Old Dutch, requesting sponsorship through a donation of pop and chips to serve at our fundraiser. If there are any school/class community members who would like to sponsor our business by donating snacks, such as canned/individually bottled drinks, small bags of chips/pretzels/cookies (nut-free), or napkins made of recycled paper, we would greatly appreciate the help! Anyone interested can contact Miss Cichosz at mcichosz@sjsd.net

Our Emergency Team and Site Team worked together to make a map of the site for our Family Fun Night (the school gym and auditorium) which includes emergency exits.

Our Entertainment Team worked on a list of activities/games for our Family Fun Night, and talked about which room to use for each activity.

Our Sales and Marketing Team made an impressive rough draft of our first poster to promote our Family Fun Night and they are working on the final copy. They also made a list of potential company names and we had a vote as a whole class. The name of our business is....drum roll, please.....Paws of the Future!

Please, check back again soon for another business update! And remember to save the date on May 5th (3:40 - 5:10 p.m.) for our Family Fun Night! We will be selling tickets soon!

Business Project Update

We are extra motivated to work on our business project, especially since we have a date  (May 5) for our Family Fun Night! Before Spring Break, each team worked together on a part of our business plan. It was hard work and we had some disagreements, but solved them by voting.

Our class was offered $200 for Career Development through our school division, so we ordered supplies that we will use for our Family Fun Night and marketing. Our Administration and Finance Team worked with Miss Cichosz to apply for a $300 subsidy through Imagineaction (a social justice program of the Canadian Teachers' Federation). We hope to use the money toward purchasing games and refreshments for our Family Fun Night. Hope you all had an amazing Spring Break! We are getting back to work on our business tomorrow.
