Parent Council Art Auction

Team 15 hopes you will support the Parent Council Art Auction! We created and donated two colourful pieces to the art auction, including the polar bear art featured in our last blog post, and the elephant below. The money raised will go toward Parent Council projects, such as improving our playground.

Lost Polar Bear

Each class at our school made a piece/pieces of art for the Parent Council Art Show and Sale. One of our pieces started out as an abstract painting. We used acrylic and interference paint on cardboard to give the painting the feeling of a dream. We then outlined the colour/value changes in the painting with black pen to make the contrast stand out even more. In the end, we decided we didn't have much of a focal point, which means our eyes didn't know where to focus when looking at the painting. We decided to turn our painting into a polar bear because it reminds us of Canada and we think many people buying art would like the image of a polar bear. We chose the design and Miss Cichosz helped us by cutting it out and putting it together with hot glue and black tape. The polar bear reminded some of us about how polar bears are losing their habitat because the ice is melting in the Arctic.

Painting our Grandmother Rocks

We have been learning about how to have a sharing circle with Richelle Scott, the Indigenous Education Teacher for our school division. To bring sharing circles home to our families, we are painting our own grandmother rocks to pass around our family sharing circles, as part of communicating our thoughts and feelings with our family. We learned to paint the rocks with only two or three colours and to keep the design simple, so that the small rocks will stand out. We are also going to add a symbol for one of the Seven Sacred Teachings to our rocks. Once we finish preparing the rocks, we will write a letter to explain their purpose, and take them home to our families.

Project Fair (March 10th)

We had a fabulous time seeing the projects at Project Fair! The students in our class were a bit nervous for the judging, but did a great job! Thank you to all the families who supported us in the Project Fair and to the school staff and volunteers who made it possible.

Living Prairie Museum Presentation (end of February)

My apologies for getting behind in blog posts. It's time to do some catching up!

Our class went to a presentation by the Living Prairie Museum with the other Grade 4/5 classes. All the classes at school went during the same day. The presentation was organized by Parent Council. We learned about the prairies, especially in Manitoba, and how this habitat has been destroyed over time. We saw a bison skull and we also got to touch furs of prairie animals, including wolf, fox, skunk, raccoon, and snowshoe hare! They were donated to the museum by a trapper. We learned a lot and were excited to take part!

Festival du Voyageur

We had a wonderful field trip at Festival du Voyageur on Feburary 19th! Mr. Blake and Mrs. Vincent's classes joined us. Some highlights were: the Instruments of Old (a show about instruments the voyageur's used), a play at the end of the day called A Day in the Life of a Voyageur (about a girl, named Emily, who beat challenges to become a voyageur even though girls weren't allowed to be voyageurs), and time to explore, shop, and try fun activities.
